Square Wave Racing Wants To Go Wild On TTXGP

Square Wave Racing SWR1 Nearing Completion

Square Wave Racing is a garage based electric race team from Columbus, Ohio who saw the potential in electric motorcycle racing after the 2009 TTXGP. John Wild is heading up the project as the rider, crew chief and fabricator for the SWR1 electric motorcycle while his partner Sean Ewing is the electrical engineer behind the project.

Sean and John built the SWR1 by converting a 1996 Honda CBR600F2 with a 76 Volt system based on LiFePO4 battery pack, an air cooled 3 phase AC motor and “a type of transmission”. They are estimating around 43 HP. Obviously Square Wave is not showing all their cards but the pictures below show multiple motors and a whole lot of batteries. That impressive wall of batteries behind the front wheel and the large, full coverage fairing is there for a reason. Like MotoCzysz and SWIGZ Racing, Square Wave’s goal is an electric motorcycle capable of 600cc sportbike performance. Sean feels confident they are close to this and he wants to win. However, the team is also out there to prove the technology in the bike.

Eventually the transmission and other electro-mechanical gadgetry will end up in a production electric motorcycle under the Rhyne Powersports name. They will run Rhyne Electric Powersports (REP) with their partner Jordan Rhyne with Sean leading the effort as CEO of REP. The plan is to go out to Infineon on May 14-16 (click here for discount tickets) with the bike and really “beat it up” in the TTXGP race. After hearing this and seeing the neon blue lights they mounted under the frame rails and I began to feel like these guys are set on putting on a show for the fans. Can’t wait.

Sean does not hesitate to admit Werkstatt Racing’s fund raising efforts inspired the team to do the same. If your so inclined or feel guilty for not donating to Werkstatt please consider helping Square Wave Racing get Sean and John to Infineon. I already offered to trailer their bike to Chicago on the way back from the Sheetiron 300 the following weekend. Please, for the sake of the SWR1 and the helping me avoid the guilt I will feel giving it back with and empty battery pack, help him fund a better option.
